I use a NAS with a single 4TB USB drive for real-time sync features. Would this storage option make the drive more vulnerable to damage compared to keeping it as an infrequent backup (not on the NAS)? This setup is quite basic, using the NUC6i5SYK with TrueNAS and Syncthing.

Whether in a NAS or not, there is no change in the risk of damage.
The actual drive will fail once it stops working.
