Comparing M1 Max and M1 Pro with Steam Deck highlights their differences in performance and features.
I’m trying to figure out which MacBook to purchase. Right now I’m using a 2013 MacBook air, and I don’t rely heavily on gaming. However, if I upgrade to something more powerful later, I want a device that can handle tasks like music production, CAD work, and light video or photo editing for the next eight years. The $600 jump from an M1 Pro to an M1 Max with an extra 16GB of RAM seems reasonable, especially since most applications benefit from the additional cores—something that appears to be true for M1-based systems.
For gaming, though, it looks like many titles won’t be available on MacOS or M1, so a more powerful machine might be necessary. Would I get a better gaming experience with an M1 Pro paired with SteamDeck, or would an M1 Max be the ideal all-in-one solution? I’m also concerned about battery life; the 14-inch model of the Max offers less endurance, which could be a drawback.
Most of the time I won’t need that extra power, but I don’t want to compromise on performance enough to struggle with a functional setup. Additionally, I’m curious whether a SteamDeck would really outperform a base M1 Pro, or if a newer console like the PS5 would be more practical given how costly gaming PCs are today.
