The 8265 is a 2x2 MIMO card, allowing it to send and receive twice the data using the same radio band. This boosts signal strength over longer distances since you don’t require a wider channel for the same transfer rate. Starting with higher speeds also reduces interference effects from nearby devices.
You intend to take advantage of the 300mbps 5ghz connection on the 3168 device. That’s all. I won’t be using the laptop as a hotspot. The router is close by.
That's the thing, its a complicated question as it might and it might not. The 8265 should pretty much guarantee it even at 20Mhz channel width, as long as your router/WiFi is 2x2 MIMO. Incidentally, from what I can see the 3168 supports 433Mbit at 40Mhz but if you're using N its going to be limited to 150Mbit at 20Mhz and 300Mbit at 40Mhz. (depends on what your router supports) Also note in real-world scenarios you may only get as little as 1/3 of that due to overheads. The reason I'm going on about this is how wide a channel you use increases the chance of neighbours WiFi interfering. Do you know exactly what your router supports or its model?
