I recently purchased a Precision T7810 to expand my budget hypervisor setup. I’m weighing the E5-2679v4 against the E5-2679Av4. The v4 runs at 2.3GHz with two more cores than the A models’ 2.6GHz 16-core lineup. While I don’t need the extra cores, assuming both can reach 3.6GHz wouldn’t be a problem and I could add those two for an additional $8 per CPU would make sense. I’m still unsure if the lower base clock of the v4 will affect performance over time, especially if other VMs push their limits while I stick to fewer cores. Could this decision be too much thinking? Is it really worth the jump in clock speed if I won’t fully utilize all the cores? Also, does the difference between 2400MHz and 2133MHz DIMMs add enough value to justify an extra $5 per stick? Thanks!

Game host serves as the main power source, with plenty of resources ready to go. PFSense runs alongside it, while ZFS FileStore or FreeNAS handles storage needs. Nginx is set up for web hosting, and a standard Linux server is used for general tasks. Everything is flexible—what you need just comes to mind when required.

Nginx is set up for web hosting, and a standard Linux server is used for general tasks. Everything is flexible—what you need just comes to mind when required.

I understand game servers generally prefer high GHz numbers, but it really varies by title. Personally, I use an e5 2660 v4 and it runs idle at around 2% usage. My setup includes VM's with pfSense, Truenas, multiple Ubuntu servers, Home Assistant, Windows, a few Docker containers, and an unfi controller—plus some things I might be missing. Even during Plex transcoding, I rarely see more than 10%. I recently turned off some cores to save power and heat, but I don’t need all those threads. I mainly used Xeon on socket 2011 for RAM and PCIe; that was the main reason I upgraded from my i3 6100. I can’t comment on game servers—they might be more demanding—but I still think a home server doesn’t require that much power.

Thanks! The processors you're considering are around $90 each. If it's not worth it, I might go back and trade them for something more affordable. Since you don’t see much performance, I’m assuming the CPUs won’t struggle to reach full speed, so I won’t be too concerned. Thanks for the update!
