I thought they were essentially the same, just configured for matx boards without extra accommodations, though I’m now questioning whether there are additional differences. Are they similar in function?

According to common sources, the B550M was essentially a rebranded version of the B450, used as an original equipment manufacturer-only alternative before the official B550 line was introduced.

No, B550 A chipset was a OEM only chipset, basically a rebranded B450 chipset. In motherboard names, B550M almost always refers to the fact the board is mATX which just means smaller vertical height, so fewer pci-e slots. There's 3 - maybe 4 - slots possible on a mATX motherboard. Some mATX motherboards also go with only 2 ram slots, otherwise there's no rule, no reason why some features would not be available in mATX form factor motherboards.
