Hello everyone, I've been assisting a friend in setting up a gaming PC for 1080P at 60 Hz. He plans to upgrade later to a better monitor. When choosing CPUs, I noticed online benchmarks show minimal performance differences (around 4-5 FPS). I'm leaning toward the 10400F because it offers six additional threads. What are your thoughts? 3500X is the lower chip, so unless you intend to upgrade the CPU later, it's better to go with the 10400F. The board differences could affect performance even more.

10400f. Six additional threads provide a major advantage. Plus, having six CPU cores without extra threads helps prevent stuttering in several games.

It’s about matching resources to demands. If a game needs more threads than available, it will force extra threads in, causing delays and instability. This is why less powerful systems with fewer cores still perform better because they avoid unnecessary overhead.

If conditions matched perfectly I’d choose 6c6t instead of 4c8t all the time. Both Intel HT and AMD SMT provide only modest improvements—around 50% at most—so in such a case 4x8t would match 6c6t in speed. In real-world use, software doesn’t improve much. Cinebench up to R20 shows about a 30% increase. I haven’t tried R23 yet, but it shouldn’t change much. When games send data to the CPU, it just needs to process it quickly. Having six threads or eight isn’t crucial; 6c6t is more stable because delays between threads on the same core are eliminated. You also likely have better utilization, so tasks finish faster. I’ve actually experienced this in practice. While gaming at 6700k hit CPU limits often, I ran 8086k and got a much smoother experience.
