Hey everyone, I am looking to upgrade my PC finally, I am currently rocking an i7 6700k, I was waiting for the 14th Gen to drop to make a decision, seeing how lack luster this gen is, I am having troubles deciding which CPU to purchase. Since this is the last gen in Intels current socket, I don't want to purchase a product that will have no upgrade path from the get go, so I was looking at Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, it's a $150 in price and having the extra cores for work related things would be nice, but I don't know if the performance is worth it, I've been looking reviews and they're usually "go 7800X3D or 7950X3D", but I really don't want to spend $650 on a processor, and as far as GPU, I was planning on pairing it with a 4080 (or 4080Ti since they're rumored to come out soon). So I wanted to get more opinions on my situation, see what y'all think. Thank you in advance!

For serious needs, opt for the 7900X—it offers better speed than the 7900X3D for non-gaming work and is more affordable. The 7900X3D struggles in gaming compared to the 7800X3D, lags behind the production 7900X, and costs much more than both. The 7800X3D will significantly boost performance for your 6700K, making the 7900X3D less appealing here.

Additionally, the bothersome issue with the scheduler means that upgrading to a non-mixed CCD CPU later requires a full Windows reinstall to undo the adjustments, or else the system won't function properly. (unless they've addressed this problem recently?)

Choose the 7800X3D for gaming focus or the 7900 non-X if productivity matters more. The 7900X3D is seldom practical. What kind of job responsibilities suit you?

Thanks for the ideas. I’m not into editing or anything formal—I tend to juggle many tabs and apps at once while working. I’m leaning toward the 7800X3D and saving up for the 4080.

Several panels and programs launch...the 7800X3D is ready. We likely focused on tasks requiring heavy processing or creative work.

A collection of windows + programs launches... Allocate 64GB of RAM. Be sure the CPU won’t be heavily used. Currently with 32GB, I have to turn off my browser(s) to run games at low CPU load (20-40%) on a 5700G system. The memory cost for tabs keeps rising, especially with more applications. A real 8-core processor remains optimal.

People often think heavy multitasking needs a top-tier processor. It really depends on how many applications you run at once.
