Choosing Intel or Ryzen with the 2x16 configuration is ideal because fewer DIMMs reduce stress on the IMC, making it simpler to enable XMP. This works well since some high-clocked CPUs find it difficult to run XMP with four DIMMs.
Use tighter binning to ensure all 4 sticks work together at the same settings as a pair of 2 sticks. A 2x2x8GB configuration might not support XMP, so it can't be returned due to rating limits. Compare single-rank and dual-rank parts, and check videos for compatibility. Four DIMMs aren't ideal for a 2:1 memory ratio that boosts frequency, though it may hurt performance.
I buy the double 2x kits for that price reason as well. The kit with 4 though is 100% tested and guaranteed to all be the same parts and will work together just fine. If you buy 2 separate kits of 2 and try to combine them, there's always the possibility the kits came from different lots or are slightly different models or parts. That opens up the possibility that they wont play nice together when you try to use XMP or combine them all together. I have never had that happen to me though, and so far they have always worked for me when I bought 2x kits of 2 for my builds, and for computers I build for others. If you want to be 100% sure they will all 4 work with each other without worry, buy the kit of 4. If you want to save money and take the possible risk I mentioned, buy the 2 sets of 2 and use those.
