Good morning, I'm working on setting up a PC for editing. It's hard to choose between the 5800x and 3900x since they're nearly the same price. I mostly use Davinci Resolve with 4k/6k projects, and gaming isn't a priority—it's mainly for work. Thanks! Alex

Hey Alex, I’ve got a Ryzen 5 3600X with a 1060 Super (low profile) and I’m using it for gaming, editing, script writing, simulations. If you’re looking to upgrade for 4K or 6K, I’d recommend the 5800X B because higher numbers mean more performance. Yeah, more power is better—hope that helps!

You're comparing two older CPUs: the 3900X (12 cores, lower speeds) and the 5800X (8 cores, higher speeds). It seems you're wondering which would work better for DaVinci Resolve based on performance and utilization.

I'll be working with an MSI X570-A PRO equipped with a 10gbit pie card and a 1tb PCIe 4.0 drive. It's quite simple, but since I'm editing from a server, I won't need any advanced 350€ board with 2.5 gbit Ethernet and extra storage options

A size 3900 would suffice for your needs, no point in going overboard. - Renata Bliss

3900x performs well for rendering and video editing, but adding more cores improves video editing speed. Intel seems to handle video encoding better, especially with Adobe tools. Your build lacks strong VRM, possibly needing airflow for the VRMs. The 3900X gets hot, so verify your board supports it.

There are more cores now! Intel performs better with Adobe since the CPU’s built-in graphics can be used. However, I’m not sure if Davinci Resolve takes advantage of the IGPU. You’re correct about the motherboard—I usually choose higher-end ones, which will last longer and support upgrades to half the CPU generation. Am4 is outdated, so it doesn’t seem worth investing in much. Keep an eye on VRAM airflow, thanks!
