You're comparing two options: a 3900x at around $410 and a 5800x priced similarly. For gaming and light editing, the choice depends on your needs. The newer 5800x offers more cores, which can improve performance in multitasking or future-proofing, while the 3900x provides solid power for current demands. Your 1050ti with 3070/3080 and 3000mhz RAM is a good setup, but consider whether extra cores will justify the price difference.

5800X suits your intended purpose better. Its superior single-core speed will shine in gaming and 8c/16t tasks, while 16t handles both gaming and light editing smoothly. The 3900X shines only when all 24 threads are fully utilized.

I’d consider the 3900X only when you really need those cores for many VMs or animation tasks. For gaming and light editing, the additional cores won’t make much difference, and the extra single-thread speed of the 5800X will be more valuable—especially with a 3080.

Evaluating performance versus price, the older 3700x/3800x might offer better value if 8 cores suffice, while the newer 5800x could justify its cost for higher demands.

It performs significantly better on a single core, offering about 25% improvement, making it much more suitable for gaming.

When purchasing a new model, the additional $100 for the 5800X justifies the cost if your budget allows. Upgrading from a 3700X wouldn't make sense unless you could afford it.

This would only be an option if budget was the main consideration.

The Zen3 5800x seems like the better pick among the two options, particularly if you mainly play games and do light editing. I’d skip the Ryzen 3000 with a 3080. If someone is thinking about getting a 5800x, I’d suggest going for the 5900x instead—they’re priced very similarly. The 5900x usually sells for more than the 5800x, and I’m confident it will hold its value for at least three years. When upgrades become necessary in 3 to 6 years, it’ll likely cost less than $50 more than the 5800x. Especially within a budget like a 3080 system, the 5900x offers better long-term savings. If it stops an upgrade even temporarily, the 5900x becomes the more economical choice. I’d recommend Intel 10th gen over the Ryzen 3000 with a 3080 if you want better overall value compared to the Zen3. The Ryzen 3000 isn’t cheaper now and runs slower. If you’re near a microcenter, a 10850k is $319—consider it the top deal right now for that area. It’ll outperform both the 3900x and 5800x, only beating the 5900x in speed.
