I don't have personal preferences, but I can help compare options if you'd like! Which operating systems are you considering, and what features matter most to you?
Because 8 and 8.1 fall short, switching tabs hurts gameplay; the windows panel in those versions is outdated. They should have stayed closer to the Windows 7 design and simply enhanced it. Also, Windows 10 will incorporate DX12 as games adopt it. 10 offers quicker boot times on most systems. In my opinion, Windows 7 remains superior over XP, then 10, Linux, then older OSes, and finally Mac.
Windows 10 had its issues for me, especially with the metro tiles, but it’s still a much better OS overall.
I favor certain aspects of both, the original Windows 8 closely matches the network configurations I prefer from Windows 7, while the latest releases, particularly version ten, add significant complexity.
I tend to favor Windows 8/8.1. MSX tends to boot really slowly and stays sluggish for about 5 to 10 minutes after powering on. It’s quite frustrating, especially compared to the speed of Windows 7. Still, I lean toward Windows 8 (1) because the mix between a Windows 7 desktop feel and modern MSX looks awkward. Plus, MSX just doesn’t look appealing to me, so I prefer Windows 7 over both Win 8 (1) and MSX.
I appreciate the look of Windows 10 in comparison to versions 8 and 7, especially its DX12 features. Windows 8 feels less impressive overall, particularly with the start menu, making navigation more challenging. I’d say (besides the settings menu) Windows 10 resembles Windows 7 more than it does 8.
I tried 8.1 on a tablet and it didn’t work well; the device was almost broken with Windows 8.1. Windows 10 solved all my problems for it. The only problem I have with Windows 10 is that occasionally a recent update changes the default apps for certain extensions—like PDFs keep switching back to Edge instead of Foxit Reader.
