I just swapped my RTX3070 for an RX6900XT, but I’m seeing the R5 3600 limit the graphics card’s speed. That’s why I’m thinking about upgrading to a CPU. However, I’m curious—would an i5 12660K be a better pick for me? My current B550 board is already in place, so replacing it would be costly right now. A 12th-gen board isn’t cheap either. Can the R5 5600X paired with RX6900XT and SAM really match up to an i5 12660K in gaming performance?
Technically, the 12660k might beat the 5600x slightly, but the difference won’t be huge. The main issue is compatibility with software. As someone who doesn’t like AMD, I’d choose the 5600x instead of the 12660k. I’ll say your 5600x will handle gaming on the 12th gen chip better than mine would, but only if you’re aiming for Windows 11 and don’t play any older titles. VRM starts failing on older games without updates to support the new efficiency cores in the latest CPUs.
I assessed the CPU performance by observing delays or failures during tasks. The current resolution and quality settings are set to 1080p with medium compression.
At Alder Lake you'd spend around 200 bucks on a board and 300 bucks on the CPU. It makes sense to grab the full 500 bucks and get a 5900x if your motherboard is already B550. Or better yet, hold off until Zen3D arrives in three months.
