I assumed one stick was single channel, two was dual, and four was quad. If the board only supports dual channels, why does it have four slots? Thanks for clarifying—I’m still getting the hang of this as a beginner. This is my first PC I’ve assembled.

In theory it's possible, but only when a platform allows it. Many consumer CPUs only use dual channel memory, meaning with four slots you'd have two sticks per channel—still dual channel. The actual number of slots mainly affects capacity. You could install four 32 GB modules for a total of 128 GB, but that wouldn't work if the board only had two slots, similar to a mini ITX design.

It offers a dual rank dual channel setup for both scenarios, which relies on the motherboard's RAM layout. For AMD systems, performance drops noticeably at 4000 unless your clock speed reaches 2000. With Intel, differences are minimal if all RAM supports 4000. Be cautious with 32GB DC DIMMs—they might not fit standard boards. There are 32GB dual rank modules available, but I’m unsure how widespread they are. Most seem to cap around 3000MHz for these types.
