I received a desktop at no cost to experiment and practice building, overclocking, and troubleshooting without worrying about big expenses. I upgraded most components significantly. I ordered the 651k hoping for better performance, but during the wait for delivery from China, I managed to install a stable, efficient version running at 3.6 GHz with 1.4v (assuming standard voltages). It reached up to around 3.2 GHz on the 651k, which feels less optimal. However, the 651k still outperforms the 631 in benchmarks. When playing games like Age of Empires II, Civilization VI, and GTA V, everything loads more slowly and CPU usage is higher with the 651k—Radeon Overlay shows this clearly in-game. I’m considering switching back to the 631 unless someone suggests ways to improve it. Also, if I reinstall the 631, can I simply restore all previous settings to their original state, or will I need to stress test again? My setup includes an ASUS F1A55M-L motherboard, Hyper X 8GB DDR3 RAM, Noctua NH-D9L fan, Seasonic Core GC500W PSU, a Sapphire Radeon 550 2GB GPU, a 500GB Samsung HD501LJ HDD, an Athlon II x4 CPU (either 631 or 651k), and a large 3.5TB SSD.
The variation between those CPUs is around 7 percent, meaning leaving them at stock wouldn’t create much distinction. If I were you, I’d attempt to overclock the 651k and compare results—if it falls short of the 631 benchmark, I’d consider selling it on eBay.
The motherboard isn't great for overclocking—no heatsinks on the VRM, a weak power delivery system, and likely limited BIOS tweak options. It probably offers little flexibility in BIOS settings. Overclocking an FM1 platform doesn’t seem worthwhile. Instead, try boosting memory speeds to 1800-1866 MHz, significantly increasing timings, and raising voltage to 1.65V–1.7V. The AMD chips should be able to handle it, and those processors are officially rated for up to 1866 MHz memory.
It's clear you're aiming for a more hands-on approach rather than relying on software. Many find it safer to invest in new hardware instead of risking damage to existing components. I've seen others go overclocking the same CPUs with similar results—sometimes with little benefit. Memory overclocking is still out there, but be cautious about voltage stability. Experimenting can be rewarding, so don't hesitate to give it a shot!
