I’ve been comparing the i7 7700k and the i7 8700k. I understand the 8700k offers two extra cores and four more threads, but does that really matter? Since I’m mainly using the PC for gaming now, I’m focusing on performance for that purpose. I plan to use a 1080 Ti and want to ensure these processors work well together.

You won't see any change in the games. Save about $35 and you'll get a better cooler or additional case fans. (or just keep it)

It depends on the games being discussed. In most situations, the distinction is barely perceptible.

In gaming you won't notice any benefit beyond benchmark results. Still, I concur that the 8600k offers six physical cores without hyperthreading, which will generally outperform the four physical cores with hyperthreading in most tasks, including gaming.

Absolutely correct, I assumed he was focusing on the K series since he plans to overclock. If not, then yes, you can save a lot of money with the 8400.

Confirming the compatibility: the 7700k fits Z170 and Z270, while the 8th gen chips need Z370.

When viewing a 7700K, switching to an 8600K would be beneficial. Those cores will have a greater impact in games compared to those few additional threads. Some games can benefit from the increased core count of the 8700K versus the 7700K, though currently there aren't many options available.

In gaming? Not really, better clocks at 7700k will help more than adding two extra cores on the 8400.
