Thanks for the response. I’ve got the CPU and a motherboard ready. Do you think this upgrade is worthwhile considering your current setup? You mentioned it’s been budgeted at $1000 Canadian.
Well, determining value is tricky. I own a 6700k @4.6ghz and a main 9900k @5ghz. The gap isn’t massive. My main tasks are Lightroom and Photoshop, especially with 46 MP RAW files. Photoshop runs smoother, and Lightroom feels snappier. The 6700k is 4 cores with an 8 thread, while the 9900k offers 8 cores at 16 threads and higher base speeds. It also has a faster cache. In practice, it’s noticeably different when you compare them side by side. For heavy editing, I’d expect a big difference. If you’re doing intense work, it might be worth it. For everyday use, my dual-core MacBook Air performs just as well. I still prefer the 6700k for normal tasks, and I wouldn’t choose a MacBook for demanding jobs like photo editing or stacking Astro images unless absolutely necessary. Also, the motherboard matters—make sure it supports good VRM if you go that route. The Gigabyte Aorus Elite is a solid pick for performance, though it might be a bit power-hungry. Whatever you decide, it depends on how often you push your system.
Thanks for your feedback. I value your input. I use a D810 with Lr and Ps, though Lr can feel slow sometimes. I’m considering a change and got a new box in 2016, spending mostly on a fresh GPU during that time. My friends’ iMacs are no longer supported on Big Sur, which made me think Hackintosh could be more eco-friendly and cost-effective for a few more years. I also have a GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS PRO WiFi in my cart. Appreciate your thoughts.
That’s a solid mobile shot. It probably covers your needs if it fits what you’re looking for. I’ve shot 800/810 too! Great build. I wish I had kept one as a dedicated Astro photographer! But honestly, LR can feel slow for me too. The 9900k helped a lot. The biggest improvement comes from multi-photo edits, exports, and imports—these steps really stand out. Hope it works out! You might also be able to sell the 6700k parts for a few hundred dollars to help cover the cost.
I'm drifting away from the subject here but the problem with the D810 seems even more pronounced with the D850. My glass isn't up to the task! I enjoy wide shots and often use a 17-35 F2.8; the corners on my D810 look terrible. I purchased that lens when the F5 was the top choice for owning. I've noticed locally that the 14-24mm is now available at significantly reduced prices. It's puzzling whether the DSLR scene and photography overall are fading as smartphones become more capable. Imagine a fully functional 14-24 F2.8 lens for less than half its original cost—that was rare just ten years ago. Value of glass hasn't dropped much. I've shot professionally with powerful strobes for years. That was a well-paying job. Now two Nikon D4s and a D800 got damaged during an outdoor shoot, but luckily my insurance helped. The money didn't buy replacements, and I never returned to shooting for cash. I have a friend who does astro photography—patience is key there. It's impressive work overall. Yea, I was a bit lucky. My dad...... used to shoot an F3 and has been into Nikon ever since. I........ started on his D1x when he got that, then D2x, D800, D810, now D850. I do have the holy trinity and I think my most used lenses are the 24-70 f2.8 and my 58mm 1.4. I don't shoot for money, never have and never really plan to; its just a fun hobby to me. I have only gotten actually serious over the past couple years, and now my claim to fame (imo) is my astro photog. I have a solid andromeda and orion shots, and I mean, I do have plenty of good standard photog shots as well. But I am FAR from being a pro. Go ahead and download this full size..................... its rather large lol. I made most of the background in photoshop as I shot this with my 200-500 F5.6 lens and andromeda is not full frame, but its about 70% filling the frame. So content aware fill and some clone stamping and I made it a much better composition. A little cheating, but, thats art for ya The Neowise comment from recently: Other good shots:
