Hi everyone, I've been using G2A to purchase games. While I’m not concerned about security since they offer a shield service, I’m wondering about the distinction between a Steam key and a Steam gift. One has numbers and letters, the other doesn’t, but do these two actually impact the games I buy? I bought Left 4 Dead 2 as a key and didn’t have any issues, and I also received it as a gift without problems. Just curious if there’s a real difference between them.

The key doesn't have to be utilized right away; anyone can access it. A present is delivered straight to your account and automatically saved in your collection.

It doesn’t matter much to you; a key simply unlocks a game. The gift goes to your Steam account, where you can choose to claim it or forward it.

I was surprised to learn you can deliver a present to another person

Yeah! You can gift them to friends (I assume the G2A ones are like this) Thats why with the old humble bundle I would get gift keys, then I could send the games I already owned to friends

A Steam Gift is a collectible in your Steam collection that can be exchanged with others. It’s essentially a key, but ultimately you’re still receiving the game.

During the summer sales, I usually purchase games as presents. This lets me decide whether to keep them or pass them on later. If I receive a key rather than a gift, as some people suggest, it will automatically go into my collection and I won’t be able to give it away.
