Share the blame evenly—part of it comes from AI, part from tariffs and Microsoft’s decision to leave Windows 10. As Windows 10 retires, businesses must purchase new PCs from companies like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. These firms are stockpiling significant amounts of RAM for their systems, leading to a tight market for DDR5 upgrades. Even though the RAM is OEM DDR5, it relies on the same semiconductor chips that are already scarce, creating price swings. AI, tariffs, Windows 11, and Black Friday are key factors. There’s also buzz about Chinese firm CXMT developing DDR5-8000 and LPDDR5X-10667 for AI purposes. Hopefully they can ramp up production to stabilize prices. Regarding performance, why fall short of 2x8? Consider downclocking to 5600 or 5200 and using a CL40 processor.
It usually performs smoothly out of the box, runs efficiently, or you might face speed problems. Generally, it hits around 4600 and takes roughly double the usual time to train. The benefit is you only need one training session unless you adjust memory settings afterward. Continuous training each boot can cause instability.
Buy today or wait? DDR4 options available now, DDR5 details uncertain. If I were setting up a new PC, I’d stick with DDR4 RAM.
Spoiler: DDR5 offers a 20-45% boost over DDR4, especially at the highest speeds. The fastest 3600MHz models may bypass DDR4 entirely. Only very old LGA1700 and AM4 chips are still using DDR4, and no upgrades are expected. Currently, DDR4 prices have jumped from around $50 to about $200 for a 2x16GB package in just three months.
