Avoid it! Take an old computer from the closet, add a couple of NICs and a WiFi adapter. Set up Linux dhcpcd and hostapd. Adjust your firewall settings and be relieved you won’t have to fear your router joining a botnet.

A branded device doesn’t automatically meet botnet requirements. The power bill would rise much faster than a standard appliance. An x86 configuration isn’t suitable for typical users.
