Compare Linux and Windows performance differences extensively.
I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 from 2021 with an RTX 3060 and an i7-10th Gen processor. On Linux I don’t need to lower the voltage and my CPU stays at a pleasant 40°C, but when I switch to Windows I need some cooling to prevent it from getting too hot. Right now I’m managing around 70°C, which is still okay. When using Minecraft with Multicraft on both systems, my RTX GPU only manages about 70 FPS while the Linux i7 can handle 135 FPS. I haven’t been able to run the NVIDIA GPU on Linux yet because the drivers are installed but don’t appear in the NVIDIA X Server settings, so I can’t force it to use the GPU. This is something that could be a problem later. Why does performance drop so much between Windows and Linux? Can you help me fix this?
The possibilities I have in mind are either your Windows monitoring system interprets Fahrenheit due to some reason (probably because of certain Corsair software by default) or you have a virus extracting cryptocurrency from your CPU. Since you're experiencing much improved gaming performance on Linux, the likelihood points more toward a virus, though that might just be because Linux's Intel drivers are superior to Windows' ones (though neither is perfect). Consider running an antivirus like Malwarebytes or performing a clean install to test.
Turn off unnecessary startup programs to save CPU usage. Performance is comparable between Windows and Linux on an 8th generation i5 laptop, with similar temperatures. Linux tends to run cooler due to fewer background tasks, though Windows performance levels closely after it stabilizes.
I’ll scan with antivirus, though I’m usually comfortable with computers and shouldn’t have any malware. The CPU usage seems reasonable based on activity, so a virus might be altering those readings. I’ve tried several monitoring tools and both display temperatures in °C. I notice the laptop feels warmer when I press the keyboard compared to Linux, where it stays at room temperature.
I own a laptop that runs custom programs to manage the cooling system, and the temperature readings show the fan running at its slowest setting on both sides.
