depends, they're both excellent options. if you're interested in video editing, rendering, 3D modeling, or any computational tasks, the 3950x or 3900x would be ideal. for gaming, the 10900k offers a slight edge. back then, when new technology wasn't available, choosing a 3900x/3950x setup was mainly about having the latest features like PCIe 4.0 and Zen 3 as upgrades.
For gaming purposes, 10900k offers a technical edge. If your system supports scaling to 16 cores, the 3950x performs better, especially for multi-threaded tasks.
if you were me, I’d begin assembling quality components as sales come in. I tend to buy used frequently, but if you prefer brand new, check out r/reddit’s buildapcsales for deals on SSDs, monitors, and similar gear. As shown in my profile, I’ve put together a complete build with several placeholders, costing about $1000 total. Once I land a solid Zen 3 and a powerful GPU, I’ll be able to upgrade my 3600/980Ti to more than what I originally paid for. I’m comfortable “gambling” on Zen 3 since Zen 2 already works well, and I’d settle for a 3600/3700X for my games or workloads. I’ve already planned an upgrade path. If Zen 3 disappears, I might trade in the 3600 for a 3700X or higher. Intel isn’t bad, but since I’m playing at 1440p most of the time, it’s mostly GPU-dependent. For 4K, it would be completely GPU-limited. Beyond 1080p, there aren’t clear reasons to go with Intel. Maybe you’d like to swap your heating unit in winter for a 10900K?
