I'm evaluating an upgrade and notice the i9-10900X and i9-10920X share many specifications. They both offer additional cores, similar clock speeds, and nearly identical overall details. Prices vary widely—ranging from 15% to 100% depending on the source. Performance scores are also quite comparable, making core count less informative for rating. If we disable two cores in the i9-10920X and compare it to the i9-10900X, which version would likely outperform? If the i9-10920X remains superior, does that justify the price gap? (My main considerations for choosing a processor are balancing cost and performance, plus ensuring at least 24 PCIe lanes. AMD mostly offers 16+4 cores except in threadripper, while Intel provides up to 16 lanes.)
They require these lanes for compatibility. There are 40 ISP lanes available on the AM4 board, along with the standard Intel platform and its chipset. The CPUs used here tend to be quite outdated, performing worse than the AM4 and 1200 models yet costing more.
The 40 units aren't all connected through PCIe ports. The 16 appears to be the maximum limit for AM4 boards. That’s clear. But the rules are defined: pick two processors with similar core counts and see which performs better. If it’s still the i9-10920X, should you pay the extra $100 or not?
It actually contains 24 lanes, yet it mentions having 24 lanes as well.
It appears the system has 16 lanes and most compatible boards provide access through PCIe ports, though I might have overlooked a less common model.
Ryzen 3000 processors feature a total of 24 PCIe Gen4 connections, indeed Gen 4.0. Of these, 4 lanes serve the X570 chipset interface, with the remaining 20 available for broader use.
I need more than 24 lanes available as PCIe connectors. Just having the lanes isn’t helpful unless they’re accessible in a usable format, which in this scenario means through PCIe sockets. It’s clear this isn’t the typical setup where a single 16-port socket works fine.
