The 9800X offers quad-channel memory and AVX-512 features beyond the 10700K. The 10700K simply runs faster overall. Apart from that, HEDT chips used there don’t support gaming optimisations due to their lower clock speeds. Overclocking will likely hit thermal limits before reaching 10700K performance. Not sure about the reason for needing the HEDT chip? The 10700k performs better. I think the HEDT version uses mesh, which is slower.

i favor more pcie lanes. the z490 will lose some sata ports. i have three hdd in raid 5, two hot swap bays—one for 2.5 and one for 3.5—and i want a blu-ray drive for old games and movie nights. i’d like a total of six sata ports. i’m considering using nvme on the board, which would disable one port, but maybe a usb 3.0 sata adapter works better in the hot swap bay. i use my current system pcs for troubleshooting drives.

I didn’t locate any YouTube videos that compare them, and upgrading the X299 will cost more. I already own a 4x4 kit for my X99 system.

It depends heavily on memory and interconnect speed (without the core), which means achieving a 9800x to match the 10700k would require a lot more effort. Some AMD chipsets don’t support RAID 5. While many folks prefer it, it’s perfectly okay for everyday users. Knowing I’ve backed up my data on a separate gaming PC gives me peace of mind if something goes wrong.

i'm not too worried about gaming speed. I said before in the discussion I like having more PCIe lanes, but I can get by with a USB 3.0 adapter for the 3.5 hot-swap bay.
