The base frequency of the i5 seems lower compared to the i7, yet the turbo boost on the i7 might outperform it in multi-core scenarios. The i7 offers more cache (16MB vs 12MB), but the i5 can be overclocked, enhancing its performance. Factors like cooling and power supply play a big role. In general, the i5 tends to win, especially if the i7 is well-cooled and powered, which is uncommon in laptops.

Your laptop seems to be struggling with heat and power issues, similar to what an i7 would face. For better performance, consider a Ryzen 7 4800H instead of an i5. This should provide significantly improved power handling.

Laptop chips face constraints in cooling and power usage. Likely the 10600k model is involved. If cooling and power improved, performance in multi-threaded tasks would likely increase.

It will draw 100W and potentially damage the laptop if used improperly. For strong mobile performance now, the best choice is a Zen 2 Renoir with 4800H(S) or 4900H(S).

I don't really follow the mobile market. But I don't see a reason in recommending a laptop with an Intel chip tbh. Zen is seriously good on mobile. And I found that Intel laptops aren't that good compared to ryzen ones really.

Intel is generally not recommended for laptops. They tend to be slower, generate more heat, consume more power, provide shorter battery life, and deliver an overall less favorable computing experience compared to other processors.

For mobile units it mainly depends on the thermal design power. Irrespective of the apparent strongest processor, performance drops quickly once it heats up. They only deliver peak power for a short time before throttling. Certainly manufacturers can enhance this somewhat. It’s unclear how to fairly assess cooling differences between laptops. Probably I’d pick a mid-range CPU with many cores instead of a high-speed CPU with fewer cores, hoping the latter stays closer to its rated speed. I’m considering swapping my daughter’s MS tablet now that it slows down noticeably even during simple tasks due to fan issues and throttling. Switching to a Chrome book seems like a better option, assuming the lighter OS reduces demands (especially with newer hardware). In theory, this tablet should handle most tasks smoothly, but real-world performance falls short.
