If you have the budget for the 3700x, purchase it. The 3600 offers performance close to 8700k and is already two years old.
I'm more of a guesser about an upcoming 8-core 4th gen release. Honestly, I'd pick the 3700x and aim for a dark rock 4 later. The stock cooler is fine, but it's not great for my needs—especially if you're sensitive to noise while working.
But is the Ryzen 3000 series truly the final CPU for the AM4 platform? Upgrading both the CPU and motherboard might be necessary.
Ryzen 4000 is the final model supported, though AMD might update and keep using this socket into the next generation. I’ve seen some discussions about it.
It doesn't make sense to wait for an upgrade just in case. Get the best option you can afford now (assuming it's still new) and upgrade later when needed. Considering how long people keep their older components, it's reasonable to aim for a system that lasts more than five years if you start with something strong.
Consensus reached. My previous machine (i5 2500k) ran for roughly six and a half years, while my new one (purchased late 2017) should last another two to three years smoothly. I might upgrade sooner than expected. Right now I’m wishing I had the 8700k; @Jakob22122003 should definitely invest in the top-tier setup within their budget.
