I opted for a PCI Gen 4 motherboard to support future upgrades, but faced a choice between AsRock B550 Steel Legend and AsRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4. Both models convert the second PCIe x16 slot to x4 when the first is at x16. Besides the 2.5Gbps Ethernet and power delivery differences, are there other significant distinctions? Which one is better suited for your 5800X3D setup? You might need four 1TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drives purchased from a discount retailer for under $300, aiming to eliminate all mechanical components.
The power supply system stands out as the key distinction. The Steel Legend offers superior power delivery compared to others. While it includes enhanced features such as a POST code for simpler troubleshooting and improved memory layout, power delivery remains the primary advantage. Regarding your GPU setup, you’ll need it in the highest PCIe lane to avoid being confined to the x4 slot. This limits performance significantly. It’s likely more efficient to swap in the 13600K and install a Z690 board like the Z690-A Pro, which provides four NVMe slots internally for a full x16 PCIe capacity.
GPU-wise i'm just waiting for the launch of the 7900XTX. Saw a few tests of the 6900XT in x4 mode and it loses about 10% performance at native 1440p, but as long as i'm above 165FPS for my monitor refresh rate or 90FPS for the Quest 2, i don't have a problem with that.
