With the upcoming Zen 3 release, I'm considering getting some components. Regarding B v X motherboards, there seems to be a noticeable difference. I've tried comparing a few, but nothing really stands out. My main concern is what to look for in a motherboard. This question came up after I built my first system a few years ago and got a basic Aorus gaming card with an Intel processor—overclocking options were limited at best. (It didn't work well.) I'm not sure which Zen 3 processor I'll receive yet, but I plan to overclock.

If I were you, I’d choose a B series since the two GPU units are becoming less impressive. However, if you can afford it, go with an X model.
300 series and 400 series boards don’t fit Zen 3 yet, but 500 series can handle Zen 3 with a BIOS update. It depends on the vendor whether they’ll make it available. Zen 3 support will be confirmed when it launches. Look at the CPU options and budget accordingly—purchase now once the details are clear. The best performance comes from checking specific models rather than general trends.

The VRM setup is becoming uncertain. Certain B550 boards include VRM parts and setups that would have overwhelmed high-end X370 models. Long-term support isn’t guaranteed anymore, since AMD indicated AM4 would end in 2020. Upgrading to a Ryzen 5000 or better will probably mean switching to a different motherboard. What matters now is value—not just price—because a decent B550 with solid VRMs costs well over $140. This isn’t the same as 2017; affordable B350 boards that still work are rare.
