Hi, I’m looking for a replacement board and looking to get an ASUS board as I prefer the bios layout etc. It Amazon prime week so they are also on offer. I know B850 boards have most the needed features but I’d like USB 40gb. Between the ASUS X870-A and the X870E crosshair hero which would be the better option there’s about £100 difference at the moment with the offers. My build is a white theme but I think black components could still looks quite good in a white build the main difference seems to be more m.2 slots and the additional 5G lan port.

Consider the available options carefully and decide for yourself. E boards tend to attract only a small group that truly needs them.

It seems there are three 5-meter sections with 3 generations of measurement. Confirmed?

Divine, the cost is $700 with no real improvement. Hmm, another talent emerging...

I don’t believe the E would provide any advantages over the X870-A board. The main change would be the inclusion of a 5g LAN, which would have been useful for my NAS plans but wouldn’t have added much value otherwise. In unboxing videos I’ve seen, the only notable feature is the 24-pin connector on the X870E and the folded pins on the X870-A—this difference seems to affect stability only slightly.

It's heavily reduced right now, otherwise I'd pass on it. However, I'm unsure if the 100-point gap between the X870 and X870E justifies the extra two m.2s plus a 5g LAN.

I don’t understand the price in dollars, but in the UK it’s usually £550, which is now £430. The white ASUS X870-A is typically £350, but it’s currently £287, so I’ll likely get a discount on one of them.

For 287 pounds it offers reasonable value, but do you have something capable of handling the 40gb/s USB connection? Keep in mind this applies only to the back port. If not, I’d pass on it since such speed is expensive and you’d need a very costly external SSD to match it. For everyday use, there’s no noticeable performance boost. The exception would be for extremely fast high-capacity video storage—current cameras don’t require more than 1GB/s (capital GB) for data transfer, and I’m not aware of any affordable option under 5 digits in price.

That’s a valid observation. I actually own three Gen 5 M.2 drives, but they came in a bundle last year—one for a boot drive, one for files, and another for games. The file and games drive was in Gen 4 mode until my MSI X870E stopped working due to stability problems. After updating it, it seemed fine at first, but eventually it failed completely. I don’t have external drives that would need this setup, so I’m planning to use LAN for file transfers instead and might build a NAS later.
