It's not that simple. I've experienced mine just at the default settings during idle at 4.350ghz single core boosting over 1.5v. The folks online seem foolish to argue about numbers when it comes to a v-core rating. The real issue is the power consumption. The ROG board lets me raise the EDC power limit to 225a, but the M-A doesn't. I haven't found a chip that can handle that much current, so increasing these limits rarely makes much difference. Remember, the values are in amps. 90a is suitable for 65w processors and 110a for 105w processors. The voltage isn't the main concern—it's the wattage. You can generally draw between 90 to 110 amps at 1.4 volts or 1.3v. But since voltage affects wattage, raising it usually means more total power, not just higher current. With newer chips using 7nm technology, higher voltages raise concerns because a temperature spike could cause shutdowns. The software can't detect this because it always measures at least 1000ms pull rate, hiding the real issue. Problems often stem from under-voltage or negative offset, which leads to cooler operation, less voltage, and lower wattage. For instance, a 4ghz 16-thread setup works well under 1.2v, but 1.4v is fine on 12nm AMD parts. If you can keep it cooler—or even cooler—you'll need less voltage. First, cooling is key before overclocking. If people have to under-volt just to reach the limit, the cooler won't maintain enough temperature, and performance will suffer. Everyone aims for sub-70°C, but by design, it can spike to 90 or 95°C before throttling. So, don't just settle for 90°C—aim lower.
I typically craft man fan curves to maintain around 80c, aiming for quieter operation. (This didn’t cause problems with my H212 on the 7400—it never exceeded 60c and ran perfectly silent). Does voltage really matter? Pushing 12v at just 2amps would likely damage a CPU, wouldn’t it? Wow—how much current is that? Nearly 350w at 1.5v, which is more than even a 5950x should handle. Could the AM4 board work for my H212 then? Maybe overkill with a 35w chip if needed.
