Popular rendering tools handle both well. In terms of speed, they’re almost similar, depending mainly on your graphics card’s strength. A card with an R9 290x will likely outperform one with an 970, but it uses more power overall.
I inquired about these graphics cards since they cost the same, and I observed the R9 290X performed better than the 970 in Witcher 3 at 4K resolution. That led me to ask about rendering quality. I believe I’ll consider purchasing a 290X as my next graphics card.
It works perfectly with this card, but avoid the one labeled 'reference cooler'—they tend to be noisy and run a bit too hot. Any custom design is acceptable.
The Maxwell design isn't currently built into popular video editing software. Neither Adobe products nor Vegas Pro offer native support. I'm still using my Radeon 6870 to leverage its OpenCL features. The 290x works in both Adobe Suite and Vegas Pro up to version 13. Generally, CUDA is more common for 3D work while OpenCL is preferred for 2D tasks like motion graphics. There are some exceptions, but those aren't the standard.
