I’m unsure which upgrade to choose since I can afford up to 3700x and don’t know what to buy for my Asus X470-pro MB. Should I consider getting a new motherboard as well, or is my existing 3200 MHz RAM enough?

Asus x470-pro works well for both of these setups without problems, but remember to update the BIOS. Choose either the 3600 or 3700x model. Next-gen consoles rely on 8-core Zen 2 chips, making the 3700x a better pick for gaming.

If I played only, the 3700x wouldn't make sense. Checking benchmarks shows it's not worth it—extra $130 isn't enough for me. Boosting headroom doesn't seem beneficial for 3600-3900, and they all end up at similar speeds. I really need 8 cores for other tasks, so I'd prefer something else.

It seems the R5 3600x offers similar performance to an i7 8700k, making it a top choice for today’s gaming. For future gaming needs, I expect an 8-core, 16-thread processor will be ideal, so I’d consider the R7 3700x.

I believe the 3700x is a good investment for me since I currently have a 2700x and they claim the 3700x can handle more overclocking.

I found one reviewer who tried overclocking a Noctua. Reached 4.3, same as the 3600. Maybe it was just luck, but I think these cards aren't worth overclocking too much. At least two other enthusiasts mentioned this.

I chose the 3600 for $199 mainly due to its performance matching the i7 8700k, which still runs smoothly at 1080p. The real reason is that I sold my 1800x with my B350 Tomahawk and a 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM for $250, effectively funding the new CPU. Since the RAM and motherboard were already available, it made sense to upgrade.
