Hey there, I'm an IT professional at a local restoration shop. We experienced a three-day network disruption over the weekend. Anyone have suggestions for software that can keep checking connectivity between your shop and your home? Ideally, if either site goes down, the active connection should alert you immediately.

It's straightforward to create a Bash or PowerShell script, or a small Java application for this purpose. Since static IPs aren't available, you'll also need a Dynamic DNS service and a script to keep the address updated.

PRTG appears to function well. PRTG Network Monitor is also offered as freeware with up to 100 sensors. Simply download the trial and it will switch back to the free version after 30 days. For more than 100 sensors, you'll need to upgrade to a paid version. If you choose not to upgrade, you can keep using the free version indefinitely.
