Looking for a game where you can design and lead your own forces, similar to Age of Empires but with a WWII or contemporary vibe? Anyone recommend?

My preferred game is Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy. It's classic yet valuable. It fits the current sci-fi trend.

Most command and conquer titles are now available as free software. SC2 suffered damage from the paper, rock, scissors approach applied to land and sea units, and the tougher AI glitches resulted from those changes. Only original SC2 or complete wipeouts remain the best options to play.
