I have an 8GB 2400MHz module on my Ryzen 1600X, and I feel the amount isn’t enough lately. I explored cheaper RAM options and noticed prices have dropped a lot. A 3000MHz 8GB module (Corsair LPX) is now half what I spent on the first one. My question: Should I buy the faster 3000MHz model and combine it with my 2400MHz one? Also, I’m curious about possible trade-offs—like channel modes and performance impacts if I switch.
Both will operate at 2400, but combining kits might not always succeed—it depends on factors like XMP settings—and it's not a certainty. However, it should function technically, though both will likely run at 2400.

The setup can easily accommodate matching frequencies and timings, usually meaning the lowest common denominator. You can boost one component while slowing another down. On my current Ryzen first-gen rig I use a 3600MHz CL18 and a 2133MHz CL14 for four 8GB DIMMs, running at 2666MHz CL18 to free up more RAM. I manually adjusted the clock speeds to 2666MHz with 1.2v, letting the system auto-select timings—this works well within typical tolerances. For a first-gen Ryzen, aiming for 2666MHz should be fine. Just keep in mind enabling XMP/DOCP might cause issues, as I do everything manually.
In summary, the first-gen Ryzen chips won't automatically boost past 2666MHz using XMP or DOCP; you'll need to adjust them manually for stability.
