Combining two sets of Ram items
I own 16GB of RAM now. I upgraded to G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (two 8GB units) DDR4-3600 CL18 for more capacity. I plan to use an alternating setup with a 32GB stick and an 8GB stick to boost performance. Are there any drawbacks to running all four sticks simultaneously? Or should I keep just the 32GB and discard the smaller ones? Thanks, Livid
Four sticks work just fine. The issue arises when combining different sizes. A 4x8GB setup is acceptable, but mixing 2x8GB and 2x16GB doesn't.
mixing RAM has been checked and isn't true. J2C made a video about it and achieved higher results with mixed RAM. It might have been harder on older systems but not with DDR4. Updated on December 9, 2022 by thrasher_565
Combining rams boosts both speed and capacity as long as the interface specs match between kits. The key is using compatible interfaces like DJR for high-end options. Generally, having two different interfaces works, but sometimes they clash and prevent operation even with top specs. It’s best to test both 32GB and 16GB units together. The main advantage comes from dual-rank performance, which usually matches what you see here. With 16GB sticks, single-rank setups are becoming more common, so you might notice only a slight improvement—around 1%—and no further gains beyond that. Primary differences rarely matter much for performance.
the 3600 ram came with the wb already installed and was discounted to $90. i didn’t remove the heat sink from the gskill ram, but maybe later. i purchased a heat gun and some pry tools along with gloves, though i’m not sure if i’ll try it yet. i considered using both sticks, but i need to check if the wb ram is taller if i don’t end up getting a 44 lane cpu so i can fit ram on both sides of the mb—just like i planned.
Primaries don't really improve performance, particularly when you're spending extra money or using a lot of voltage in three different RAM options—3200 CL16, 3600 CL18, and overclocking. Ignore OC unless you care because it can be annoying or even dangerous depending on your target speed. Most people stick to just mildly annoying settings since they usually lack the hardware to reach higher speeds (like 4600+) and don't benefit from desync FCLK/gear 2 (5200+).
