I'm using 32GB of Crucial Ballistix 3600 with a Ryzen 5 3600 running at 1800MHz. I'm considering adding more RAM after upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5950X. Crucial stopped selling performance RAM, and their current DDR4 "Pro" sticks only offer 3200MT with CL22. I want to keep the original clock speeds at 1800. I've been with Micron/Crucial for a long time, so I haven't focused much on other brands. Should I replace one 8GB pair with two 16GB pairs from another reliable brand? Or should I just purchase another brand's 2x32GB DDR4 3600 CL16? (The Crucial "Pro" 3200 2x32GB is about $100 on Amazon, but I prefer faster speeds and better timings.)

You can purchase additional RAM with Micron memory of the identical type, and it should function properly.

Combining RAM is quite tricky, and matching capacities adds another layer of difficulty. Even within identical model numbers, you might encounter kits that don't function well together, and compatibility issues become more likely when adjusting capacities. These are the same products as before, but without the XMP profiles included. If you need to input a specific profile manually, it should work fine. I’d likely choose another kit unless it’s extremely affordable.

No, that's not true. The RAM speed has a noticeable impact. With the 5900X I had 1600 MHz, and with the x3d it's similar.

I checked for alternative methods beyond testing at different frequencies. There are identifiers and diagnostic tools available to assess chip quality, though they may vary in detail. The non-RGB 3200 you mentioned also works well at 1800 MCLK.

For example, if targeting 3200MT/s, set FCLK at 1600MHz. Check the label for exact details; it will indicate the IC model, such as ".M16FE1" or ".M8FB1". A value of 16 means dual rank, while 8 indicates single rank. You can use this to estimate IC density and identify the revision. Typically, you should look for Micron 16Gb Rev. B on these components.
