Combining memory from identical brands and models
Combining memory from identical brands and models
You're looking at a common setup dilemma. Mixing 16GB and 32GB sticks isn't recommended, but since these kits are nearly identical, the main concern is stability and compatibility. Using two different sizes together can cause issues with memory controller communication or overclocking limits. If you go for 48GB, it might work but could lead to performance hiccups or hardware stress. Stick to matching sizes for the best results.
I was also considering the same idea and looked at that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTS0ybQ3lCI
This setup matches the configuration I'm using: 2x8 plus 2x16 TeamGroup Vulcan Z DDR4-3000, running at 16-18-18-38. All four modules performed well with both my Intel system (9600K on Z390) and the Ryzen 5900X built on B550. I've even pushed them over their XMP limits to 3200 speed while maintaining the same timings, including secondary and tertiary settings.
It should function, but don't rely on the XMP profile of either kit. You'll need to check stability yourself, and this applies to all mixing kits alike.
I followed the advice given for both Intel and AMD systems. Initially, I used two sticks and then added two more of the same type with a different capacity. The motherboard easily accepted the XMP profile in both cases.
Great to hear it’s working for you, but many others still face issues. Check the forums—there are lots of people struggling with XMP after adding sticks.
There's always a risk when adding more sticks, but I don't think the capacity is what makes it an issue. It's different XMP profiles or different chips on the RAM. If the only difference between the two is the capacity, I'd wager that it's more like putting in identical sticks than putting in totally different ones.
