I have 16 GB of RAM and am planning to expand for a Hyper-V lab. I’m considering two options: a 32GB kit in dual channel or a 48GB kit in single channel. I want to know which setup works best, especially since mixing sizes could cause compatibility problems like running only in single channel mode.
Sure, you can achieve that by using different amounts of RAM on the same channel. For example, pairing a 4GB stick with an 8GB stick allows them to operate in dual-channel mode—each handling 4GB together and the rest in single-channel. The total 48GB will also run in dual-channel if you use high-speed connectors. Just make sure to use 2400MHz RAM modules for optimal compatibility.
Gather the remaining two 8GB units. Although you might be conserving a bit, it doesn’t make sense to have 48GB when you probably won’t need 32GB. I’ve swapped RAM before; it’s mainly been on boards from the same brand and with similar speeds, just pairing an 8GB and a 4GB stick instead of aiming for 16GB. Avoid mixing brands and speeds—they’ll always default to 2133, even if timing differs.
