Code 31 and 98
Code 31 and 98
Good morning everyone! I’m facing a problem with my new build. I just upgraded my motherboard and CPU to the Z790 Hero and 13900K. Despite checking everything carefully, I keep seeing codes 31-34 or 98. I’ve tried unplugging and reattaching components one by one, but it’s still unclear what device is causing it. Any advice would be really helpful—I’m stuck!
These three codes are merely startup instructions, allowing your PC to launch properly.
According to the Asus board manual version 31, memory installation is complete. The CPU has begun post-memory initialization. Console output devices are connected, and the GPU appears to be functioning properly.
The main concern is whether posts provide information about fan activity, responses to pressing the power button, monitor connections, presence of a boot disk, and access to the BIOS.
This happened only once after resetting the CMOS. It moved to BIOS then wouldn’t start again. The problem appeared to be a boot failure, possibly because the old OS didn’t accept changes. Since it was just a CPU and motherboard upgrade, I had to reinstall Windows. Now everything functions except for the PCIe device drivers, which aren’t being recognized.
Install the GPU drivers and connect your video output to the graphics card. Your PC starts up normally with the built-in graphics but not with the GPU. Verify if the GPU is functioning on your previous motherboard. If it works there, the issue might be with the CPU or motherboard itself. Look for bent pins on the motherboard and ensure the CPU is correctly seated. When using PCIe power cables for the GPU, make sure they are connected securely on both ends. Change the PCIe mode in BIOS to match your GPU's requirements. Also, disable features like 4G decoding, smart access memory, or reset options if available.
You've set up a similar PC with the same motherboard and CPU, but you're encountering the same issue with code 31. You've tried using two 16GB Corsair Dominator 6200 MHz RAM sticks, moving them to the farthest slots, which works fine. Now you're unsure what to do about the other two sticks or slots. It seems like the problem might be related to the specific configuration or compatibility of those additional sticks. You're looking for guidance on resolving this without knowing the exact cause.
I'm learning more, and it seems the Asus ROG z790-E can only fit 2 sticks of DDR5 16GB or 2 sticks of 32GB, not 4.
It turned out the problem was using a drive with Windows installed that didn’t work well, so I had to wipe it clean and reinstall the OS, and it’s now running properly.
