I received a notification about a CMOS issue and looked into removing and replacing it, but couldn't find any guidance. Now my screen is off and the error has stopped appearing. The power is on, yet fans aren’t running. For context, I’m using an HP Pavilion laptop, and it seems the CMOS isn’t built into the motherboard—it’s powered through the battery pack instead. I’m curious if anyone knows how to resolve a CMOS problem when it’s managed by the battery.

CMOS isn't a power source. A battery keeps things running when electricity is off. The clock is similar. There seems to be an issue with how you asked the question.

You checked for issues with the CMOS and its battery. The system distinguishes between them clearly. The battery keeps the CMOS active when power is off, but the actual chip resides on the motherboard. Let me know if you need help identifying the specific problem.

I encountered a CMOS checksum issue. I powered down the laptop and turned it back on, but nothing appeared. I couldn’t access BIOS or restart it. The device still powers on but remains completely dark and silent.

It appears the CMOS could be damaged. You might want to follow these troubleshooting tips from HP: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/is...2337994-16
