Cloudflare vs Quad9
Cloudflare vs Quad9
Looking for an alternative DNS service beyond your ISP since they restrict adult content sites (lol). I ran DNSBench and here are the findings: Cloudflare stands out as the quickest for cached queries, though it lags slightly for uncached and DotCom traffic. UltraDNS and NTT America aren’t on the radar, but Quad9 emerges as a solid choice. It offers decent speeds for cached requests and significantly better performance than Cloudflare for uncached and DotCom use. Below is a summary of the two providers:
1. Cloudflare - Fast cached, average speeds around 100.
2. Quad9 - Slightly slower cached but much better for uncached and DotCom, with speeds up to 149.
Quad9 also includes malware protection, which adds value. Which one would you prefer?
Cloudflare focuses solely on DNS, keeping a clean separation. Quad9 actively intervenes to block specific domains, making it distinct from Cloudflare’s approach. That’s why I avoid OpenDNS as well—I prefer my DNS to remain untouched, only allowing pure, unaltered traffic through the router. It’s not just about speed; implementing DNS over TLS prioritizes privacy by preventing ISPs from monitoring your queries, even though it may slightly reduce performance. If I hadn’t adopted DNS over TLS, I’d likely rely on full DNS resolution through the router instead.
