Accidentally pressed CTRL+ALT+F4, and it opened the virtual console. To exit, type "exit" and confirm. If you entered your password and got an incorrect login message, try resetting your password or checking for typos. Make sure you're using the correct login details.

You likely need to press a specific key combination such as CTRL+ALT+F6 to restore access. Experiment with different methods or reboot the system to return to the desktop environment.

The same method you used for tty sessions works here: CTRL + ALT + F1-8 (choose the number you think corresponds to Mint). Login requires entering your username and password. Even after logging in, you'll remain in the terminal and need to start a new graphical session while the old one stays active. If two graphical sessions run under the same user, it's common to switch to tty if one crashes, allowing a safe reboot or update without affecting the other.

Enter your username and password. If you entered "exit" first, it indicates no such user exists, preventing a match. Upon successful login, you'll be authenticated in the console. To log out, press exit or CTRL+D. Others recommend using CTRL+ALT+Fx to return to the UI (usually F6, F7, or F8).
