Consider updating your system. For Windows 8 and OEM setups, you don’t need a key or activation right away—it’s already included in the BIOS. Copy the Win8 ISO from Microsoft onto a USB drive or external storage, then boot from it. HP installations are generally unnecessary and take up significant space. The recovery process is ineffective because Windows 8 already supports those features. It mainly adds extra add-ons and applications to both the desktop and touch interface.

I understand the situation and the fact that even if I need to 'recover,' I’ll still have the old HDD. (Unless I find something better, like those odd caddy things, seems wise) Thanks to all your support, especially @ Altecice. Just hoping it arrives by Friday.

You might need to try activating the product without entering your retail key first. The system blocks activation using only OEM keys, so you may want to obtain the OEM version from the manufacturer. Your key is valid for the original device, but not for a retail license.
