I understand there are many similar discussions online, so I apologize - but I have a particular scenario in mind.
My goal is to upgrade my SSD that Windows runs on, mainly because of space constraints. Since my system doesn’t have room for both the old and new drives, I need to follow these steps:
Make a full backup of my entire Windows 11 installation, including all software (important for a smooth reinstall).
Remove the existing SSD and install the new one without any Windows installed.
Set up installation media on an external drive to install fresh Windows 11.
Restore the previous Windows 11 installation image.
Could this work? Especially points 1 and 4, as I’m aware you can use an external drive as a boot medium beforehand.
Looking forward to your reply.

Yes, this can be achieved using an Image instead of a Clone.
You need an m.2 slot with an Image.
If you have another drive with enough free space to accommodate your current m.2 drive:

1. Download and install Macrium Reflect.
2. Execute the software, generate a Rescue CD or USB (save it on a small USB flash drive or DVD).
3. In the Macrium client, create an Image on another drive, such as an external USB HDD. Select all partitions; this produces a file named xxxx.mrimage.
4. Power off the system.
5. Replace the two drives.
6. Boot from the Rescue USB you made earlier.
7. Restore through the toolbar, specifying the Image created in step 3 and the target drive for the new m.2.
8. Proceed and wait for completion.
That should resolve the issue.

Thank you for your prompt feedback.
The new SSD I've ordered is available at Amazon.co.uk.
The external drive I'm using is quite old and mechanical, but its main role would be to serve as the Windows 11 installation media.
I assume the image doesn't need to be installed on a hard drive at all—perhaps it can simply reside on another drive as an image without overwriting that storage.

Cloning or imaging cannot work with a brand-new operating system. Choose one option: either perform a fresh OS installation on the new drive, then reinstall drivers and apps, or proceed with the imaging process and transfer your current OS to the new drive while keeping the rest of the data there.

Thank you, the images look exactly as you prefer - just starting the download of the trial now.
