Clock speed drops under heavy use during overclocking for i5-9600k
I bought and set up the i5-9600k with the goal of boosting performance through overclocking. It’s currently running at 5GHz at 1.36V, and in Windows Task Manager it shows 5GHz when idle. After testing with Cinebench, the clock speed drops to around 4.25GHz. I suspect thermal throttling might be the issue, so I checked an HW monitor—temperatures were in the mid to high 60s, which doesn’t help much. I also looked at XTU, which reported power limit throttling during heavy use. With a 450W PSU, I’m wondering if a different one is needed or if there’s a setting I can adjust.
Check the newest BIOS version. When you begin the Cinebench test, does it immediately switch to 4.25GHz or remain at 5GHz briefly before dropping? If yes, does the monitor's power draw in HWMonitor fall to 95W? In that scenario, attempt to push the turbo limit to its maximum (around 4095) in the BIOS settings.
I updated the BIOS for my motherboard during CPU installation, and the clock instantly dropped to 4.25 GHz. This might be a problem, but I’m running the system with a 450W Corsair PSU and have an 1070ti graphics card, 16GB RAM, plus an NVMe SSD and three HDDs. Could it be the low wattage of my PSU affecting performance?
