Hey everyone, I just set up my first PC with an i7-12700, a Prime z690-P motherboard, 16GB DDR5 memory at 4800MHz, an EVGA 1000GT PSU. The RAM isn’t hitting 4800MHz even when I enable XMP—sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. If I set the speed manually to 4800, it still doesn’t work. I’m looking for tips to get it to run at full speed. Also, after launching apps that need a restart, the system turns off but stays on with lights in the case; I can’t see anything and have to press the power button to shut it down. Could be an issue with the memory itself? Thanks for any help!
It's a DDR5 build, and the non-K components can handle up to 6400MT/s if the motherboard is solid. In Gear 2 (the DDR5-focused stage), you usually don't need to adjust VCCSA unless you're aiming for higher speeds around 7000MT/s. The non-K CPU challenge mainly applies to Gear 1, which is better suited for DDR4. Confirm you're using the right memory slots (slots 2 and 4 from the CPU side) and that your BIOS is up to date. Older BIOS versions can cause memory problems, so it's worth checking.
Intel confirms the CPU backs DDR4 3200 and DDR5 4800 speeds. Use one RAM stick at a time across all slots, reattach the CPU cooler, or reinstall the processor.
The second and fourth positions (starting from the CPU side) work best. If those two and four slots aren’t filled well, the first and third slots become nearly impossible to use due to DDR5 speed. This likely explains the problem.
