Hi,
I was curious about how people optimize and maintain an older PC's performance and cleanliness.
Previously I used CC cleaner, but now it feels cluttered with unnecessary additions, slow to run, and comes bundled with unwanted software.
My current approach includes:
1. Running Disk Cleanup via Windows, cleaning system files, then checking all other boxes for cleanup.
2. Right-clicking on the drive, selecting Properties, then choosing Tool -> Error Checking and Run Defrag.
3. Deleting files from the folder “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download”.
4. Using Settings -> System -> Storage -> "Free up space now" or deleting temporary files.
5. At the CMD prompt, executing “sfc /scannow”.
Any additional tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Vanz

CCleaner was placed on the backlist by Microsoft, though it can lead to issues with Windows 10 if used. I only ensure defragmentation is disabled and use Disk Cleanup to clear drives.

What operating system is being used?
How many users have been active over time?

Windows 10 and 11, different laptops and desktop PCs (my own, my sons, daughters, wives, friends... etc.), 3 to 5 users at a time.

You don't want to defrag a ssd.
I don't bother cleanup unless I am running out of space or have some issue that it might fix.

What does "Defragmentation is turned off" mean? Have I never done this, and does Windows automatically defrag a drive? "Drive's are cleared using Disk Cleanup." That's all?

my wife's and parent's computers are quite old—some are over 10 years, which makes them slow and often problematic. I try to keep them running by cleaning them with the methods you mentioned, but then issues keep coming up again...
🙁
I’m planning to create a simple guide so they can fix their PCs themselves without me having to bother them anymore.

The computer's performance isn't significantly affected by hardware limitations. The main problem usually lies with the software. If it feels slower now compared to before, there might be other processes or potential threats causing the delay.

Maybe a complete reset and reinstall should be looked into.

This begins before it becomes sluggish.
Now it is slow, caused by user interactions.
