I've experimented with that approach. Just insert a bootable Windows USB, clear all existing partitions, and start the install. It will see the drive as fresh. For complete erasure, using an Ubuntu live USB and running DD is another option.

If you plan to replace the drive, using the Windows Media Creation Tool is a smart choice. It clears, organizes, partitions, and then installs Windows. You can get it for free from Microsoft. A USB with at least 8 gigabytes works, though 16 is preferable. Good luck!

I won't use it as the boot drive. Just adding it to an existing system.
