There are many PC games that won't work on today's Windows systems because of hardware or software issues. Some developers regularly release updates to fix these problems. Valve has kept Half-Life from 1998 functional on any PC, and Blizzard still supports StarCraft. Even HD remakes make them playable now. On the flip side, some titles have been dropped entirely and remain only on old hardware or emulators. Ports exist for games like Wolfenstein, Doom, and others, with fans adapting them into new versions. Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe runs the 1996/97 version, and I’ve recently played 'RVGL'—a modern engine for the 1999 ReVOLT RC game. If you're looking for more options, check out lists of games that still attract fans and are maintained on modern platforms.

Cave Story supports almost any platform, including Windows 10. Even though it's a substantial game, few people are aware of it.

CaveStory is a game that keeps getting developer assistance and remains available in multiple versions today. ...That wasn't the point I was making.
