Clarification on performance capabilities of the ASUS HERO X870-E.
Many motherboards I encountered suggested that adding a second M.2 would cut PCI-E Gen 5 lanes from x16 to x8. However, the ASUS Hero model still supports running at the main PCIe 5.0 lane in x16 even with two M.2 Gen 5 drives. This confirms the specs for this board are accurate.
It's the same maximum limit on this board. It's based on a Gen 5 CPU lane configuration. As per the technical details: when M.2_3 is active, PCIEX16_1 handles eight channels, PCIEX16_2 manages four, and M.2_2 is turned off. Also, are you really requiring Gen 5 SSDs? They aren't significantly faster for most desktop tasks—I'd use Gen 4 drives here and let the chipset handle them.
Observe the motherboard details – the constraints really kick in after 3x M.2. It looks like M.2_1 and M.2_2 don’t interfere with the initial PCIe 5.0 lane, keeping it in x16. The model I’m referring to begins with these limitations, which is what I needed to confirm. The focus shifts less on Gen5 speed and more on pairing dual drives without sacrificing x16 performance in the first PCIe slot.
